Other Paris'... less pleasant... stories...
This episode made think about the importance of being free to eat a yogurt... or rethink my workplace.
I am doing 39h of work compressed in 3 days and half. It's really good to have other 3 days and half off, however, my experience proved me that this is too violent for the body. 12h in front of a computer, sometimes more than 6h without eating, and no time to go to the toilet. Therefore, basic needs not fulfilled.
I work in a Hotel reception. Starting work at 7am, my first break is at 12h30. For a coffee addicted such as me, it's really hard to wait until this time (when my breakfast was at 5h45). So my colleagues always bring me a coffee (and a hidden pastry) to reception so I can secretly drink/eat (if I'm lucky enough to not be seen on the cameras). I do feel bad about it. But I shouldn't. Because not all workplaces are like this. I did work for 5 years for Hotel which allowed me to have my 15min break in the morning. Where I could sometimes eat porridge, or make toasts, or drink orange juice, or make an expresso and eat some pastries with no guilty and no hiding.
So on the other day I fancied a yogurt. My colleague had to bring it hidden in his pocket!
Having study human resources, I understand where Hotel property begins. And when making a simple copy of a personal document, or eating a mini croissant, can be considered stealing. But I also support the idea that the company needs to provide a healthy and pleasant work environment so people feel motivated and respect their company.
Not wanting to enter in too much detail, I do feel explored and not respected. Maybe I had too good experiences in the past and now I'm too spoiled... but I just want to feel I'm a human being and not a money-making machine (for others!).
...maybe I would do an extra effort if "my" Hotel would be like this (and I could used the swimming pool of course)...
For now, I am happy to do a break in hospitality and explore other fields I am interested in...
